Binary Systems intended Starflight 2 as more of a follow-up to its widely popular Starflight than a true sequel. Starflight 2 introduced many new features including an interstellar trade based game economy, a new combat model, and dozens of alien species scattered across an even larger game map. An epic storyline, time travel, and a race of aliens that resembled Midwest farmers called "The Nelsons" made Starflight 2 one of the most memorable games of the 1980s.

Starflight 2 was ported to the Amiga and Apple Macintosh platforms by MicroMagic, Inc. in 1991.

Besides an unofficial sequel in the form of Protostar, an official fan-created sequel project called Starflight III Project is currently in production.
