King of the Monsters is a simulated fighting/wrestling match that are reminiscent of kaiju and tokusatsu pictures. Players get to choose any one of the 6 monsters for battle.
The Characters
GEON: A Godzilla-like Dinosaur.;
WOO: A King Kong-like gorilla (not available on the ports);
ASTRO GUY: A typical tokusatsu superhero;
POISON GHOST: A creature covered in toxic waste (not available on the ports);
ROCKY: A giant golem made of boulders;
BEETLE MANIA: A large beetle like creature;
KotM Battlegrounds
All the battles in King of the Monsters take place in Japan. 6 cities (1 for each monster) is chosen as a stage. They are Tokyo, Kyoto, Kobe, Osaka, Okayama and Hiroshima.
King of the Monsters 2: The Next Thing
On May 25, 1992, SNK Playmore and Takara made a sequel to the King of the Monsters game for the Neo-Geo, with a Super NES port. This sequel takes the original into new directions and giving four original monsters the role of heroes. Geon, Astro Guy, Vaxus and Woo are defending Earth against alien threats from a creature called Famardy. The game also features a 2-player competition where players get to choose any monster. Only in 1-player Mode can a player choose one of the Heroes.
The Heroes
SUPER GEON: Geon's super-charged form;
CYBER WOO: Woo as a cybernetic gorilla;
ATOMIC GUY: Astro Guy with upgrades to his arsenal;
QUEEN VAXUS: A glowing Vaxus that releases scales when doing any attack (not available on the Super NES version);
The Alien Menace
HUGE FROGGER: A giant toad with a space helmet.;
EIFFELYTE: A humanoid creature with a detachable blob/squid-like head;
CLAWHEAD: A mutated creature with two horned heads, no arms, and a large mouth on its belly.;
SUXAV: A dark cloned Vaxus who's name is actually Vaxus' name spelled backwards;
BEETLEMASTER: A large Scorpion like monster with a detachable brain;
SACK EYES: A giant mutated sea slug;
LAVICUS: A strange creature with long fingers and a serpentine body;
KotM 2 Battlegrounds
Three of the Japanese cities in KotM remain in the sequel. Other areas of battle go by generic names. They are American City, French City, Grand Canyon, Desert, Ocean, Volcano and Hideout.
