The game is the first in a series of stand alone games set in the Guild Wars universe, followed by Guild Wars Factions and Guild Wars Nightfall. Guild Wars is one of only a few commercially produced and distributed online role-playing games to offer play without subscription fee.
Guild Wars shares some features with massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPG), however it was termed a CORPG by its developers to emphasise the differences in its approach to online role-play compared to many of its contemporaries. Guild Wars has features such as a low level cap, instanced game worlds, NPC henchmen to assist players and instant travel which combine to support casual online RPG game play. The game is also designed for competitive play, where characters may be created at the highest level specifically for Player vs Player (PvP) games. Also, skills are regularly modified to ensure balance and variety in gameplay. Guild Wars tournaments are regularly arranged offering prize money to the winning teams.
Gameplay
Guild Wars combines aspects action RPGs, online RPGs, and competitive multi player games into a single game. A player can participate in a story driven RPG campaign as well as team based competitive arena battles. A player creates a character to play the co-operative PvE storyline, or immediately participate in competitive PvP battles.
Guild Wars has been likened to collectible card games such as Magic: the Gathering because of the way skills are used in gameplay. A player must choose a limited number of skills from the pool of those available to them prior to entering battle, which is similar to a Magic the Gathering and yu-gi-oh player selecting cards. A player may consider a specific strategy for the area they are entering, or use a general skill set up which utilises synergy between different available skills. When a team is formed the strengths and weaknesses of player professions can also be considered which can allow players to specialise into particular tasks and allows more complex skill combinations.
PvE Gameplay
The PvE gameplay of Guild Wars is much like other MMORPG games(massively multi player online role-playing game). The player explores the world, kills monsters, performs quests for NPCs and completes missions to advance the storyline. The player is rewarded with experience, skill points, skills, gold and items for completing these tasks. Rewards are used to advance the character in level and power and for unlocking items for use across the player's account. Guild Wars restricts a player character to a maximum level of twenty. Any experience gained once this level is reached contributes to skill points for the character.
