Colin McRae Rally, the first title of the franchise, became a critical and commercial success, generally acknowledged as the pioneer of realistic rally racing games with its damage-modelling and enduring courses.
The series is being brought to the Mac for the first time by Feral Interactive who will be releasing Colin McRae 2005.
Colin McRae Rally
Colin McRae Rally, the first game of the series, was released for the PC and PlayStation platforms in late 1998 in the United Kingdom, Codemasters' homeland, and in early 2000 in the United States. The car featured on the front cover of the game was the Subaru Impreza. The cars included are: Subaru Impreza, Ford Escort WRC, Mitsubishi Lancer EVO IV, Toyota Corolla, VW Golf, Seat Ibiza, Škôda Fabia, Renault Mégane and a few extra cars to be unlocked. The countries included are: New Zealand (gravel and mud), Australia (loose pea gravel), Monte Carlo (ice, snow and tarmac), Indonesia (mud and boggy grassland), Greece (dry rough gravel), United Kingdom (snow, mud and tarmac), Sweden (snow and ice), Corsica (tarmac) and a few secret courses, only available on PC. This game also had a Rally School so you could learn the basics of rallying. The bonus cars are: Ford Escort MKII, Lancia Delta Integrale HF, Ford RS200, Audi Quattro Sport S1, Toyota Celica GT-four ST-205 Gr. A and a 460bhp water powered concept car named Millennium 4 Rallye (or M4R). Amongst the other countries there were four more secret tracks that you had to unlock, only in the PC version. Three of them were a special-stage based circuit and the other was a large circuit in outer space. Here is the description of the four stages:
First Stage: Country: Secret (Danger - Open Cast Mind); Location: Tipton; Type: Special-Stage; Weather: Clear; Observations: This particular course is located in a quarry, you race through paths enjoying the scenery were you can see several digging machines. In the start of the stage you can see, although the graphics in some versions may not help, a banner in the starting gates that is an image of another Codemasters game, the "TOCA Touring Car Championship".
Second Stage: Country: Secret (Mile High Parc); Location: 6.000 FT (in the air); Type: Special-Stage; Weather: Clear; Observations: In this stage you race in the clouds, literally. You have to be quite careful in the stage because there is nothing to stop you from falling down. You can see, while you race, a plane that is continuously flying around the stage.
Third Stage: Country: Secret (Retsil Lap); Location: Retsil Cluster (in space); Type: Circuit; Weather: Clear; Observations: Here you race in a circuit, or cruise trough a space road. While you race you may notice that the road is multi colored, and while you drive the car from one side to another, your car changes his color to the one in the road. Also, in the stage there are lots of asteroids spinning around and on the side of the road you can spot a lot of publicity banners, like for example: "Barron's Cream" (the first banner that appears in the stage), a movie banner starring Guy Wilday in "Two Fisted Action" (the second to appear, must be a parody), "Aliens From Venus" (the third one to appear), a supposed fictional game released by Codemasters named "Jeff Prichard's Extreme Astro Ball '34" with a Codemasters logo in the lower-right corner of the banner (the fourth banner) and the last one, a banner that says "I can't believe it's not fish" and "Now in cubes", a parody to the famous phrase "I can't believe it's not butter". These banners repeat them selves after this last one till you finish the race.
